U.S. Virgin Islands

Known as America’s paradise, the U.S. Virgin Islands, is located in the Caribbean, in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The U.S. Virgin Islands are a group of islands that are an insular area of the United States, and are geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, and form the border between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of three main islands: Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas. There is also the small, but historically interesting and distinct Water Island, and other surrounding minor islands. Formerly the Danish West Indies, they were sold to the United States by Denmark in the Treaty of the Danish West Indies of 1916, and the population is comprised mostly of Afro-Caribbean descent.

Saint John, is considered the most tranquil island on earth, even though is it the smallest of the three islands. Its unspoiled beauty is considered perhaps the greatest found anywhere in the Caribbean. It’s no surprise that Saint John leads the way in environmental preservation, and is primarily a U.S. National Park. Because there are no airports on Saint John, the only access to the island is by boat.

Saint Croix, is the largest of the islands, at 82 square miles, and consists of two distinct towns: Christiansted. and Frederiksted. Rich in cultural diversity, it also offers a mix of rainforests, sugar plantations, old forts, and great scuba diving. While the economy is not based on tourism, it offers a tranquil tropical destination for visitors.

While the islands are American territories (and a favorite of American tourists since they don’t require a passport). The West Indian culture remains the strongest influence.

Saint Thomas, is home of the terrirtory’s capital; Charlotte Amalie. It's the most popular cruise port in the Caribbean, along with the big resorts, Saint Thomas, is the most commercialized of all the islands.
